SMS Short & Long Codes / Numbers
About WinSMS Short and Long Codes
Dedicated Short or Long numbers are used for 2-way messaging applications as well as giving you a “local” presence by way of a local number in the country you are sending to.
This makes it much easier for your customers to reply to you and saves them costs by giving them a local number to reply to.
A Short Code is typically a 5 digit number which is often only dedicated to receiving MO (Mobile Originating) SMS messages for use in competitions or ordering systems, however they also give you the opportunity to use a short and catchy number, that your customers can easily remember, in all your campaigns.
A Long Code is a 10-12 digit number that is dedicated to your account for a particular country so that your messages come from a local number and so that your customers can reply to a local number instead of an international number, saving them money.
As with normal replies, SMS messages sent to a short or long code number will be stored in your online in-box (On the Short/Long Codes tab, in the client zone) where you can view them or download them as a CSV file. Once downloaded, you will be able to import the numbers into the WinSMS software for further processing and messaging.
The following routing options can also be applied to received messages:
- Forward to another cell number.
- Forward to an email address.
- Auto-Reply message to the sender.
- Forward to a website URL (WebHooks)
Cost of Service
The cost of a short or long code number depends on the country you are applying for and normally consists of a setup / provisioning fee and a monthly rental. In some cases there will be a nominal charge for messages received on these numbers.
